Petrochemistry

Petrochemical business are often established near refineries, since they require naphtha. Producers and consumers of ethylene are often connected with one another through ethylene pipelines, in order to even out fluctuations in production.

The most important process in petrochemistry is steam cracking, in which naphtha or hydrowax is cracked in the presence of steam, in dwell times of a matter of seconds and temperatures between 800°C to 850°C (1470°F to 1560°F).

Steam reforming of refinery gases or even light naphtha provides mainly carbon monoxide and hydrogen for production of methanol, ammonia, acetic acid and hydrogenation processes.
